Our Team
Global Nation is a think/do tank focused on improving international cooperation to tackle humanity’s greatest challenges: human development, climate change and conflict.Global Nation advises many of the world’s leading institutions, including the Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Wellcome Trust, WHO, WMO, UNDRR, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and national governments. We also receive grant funding to pursue thought-leadership and movement-building for a fairer international system. This includes our work to build the Global Public Investment (GPI) movement and the Global Solidarity Report, a scorecard that is, for the first time, measuring the international community’s ability to tackle and withstand our generational challenges, whether climate change, pandemics, or major-power conflict.

Deputy Director
I enjoy wearing many hats at Global Nation. My responsibilities include delivering advisory projects with clients including the Gates Foundation, WHO, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and national governments, leading our strategy and business planning, and supporting our research, hiring, and operations.
Cara Lew
Economist and former strategy consultant at McKinsey & Co. Some highlights include advising a think tank on how to identify Canadian cities ripe to integrate immigrants into their economy and community, and publishing a framework for US states to budget COVID-19 fiscal gaps while delivering services and protecting vulnerable populations. Prior to McKinsey, Cara worked as a Rotational Leadership Associate at TD Securities, co-founded Plan International Canada’s Youth Advisory Council, and was awarded a research grant to study the democratisation process of Burma in Yangon. She holds an MBA from London Business School and an MA Economics from the University of Toronto.
Hassan Damluji

I am Director of Global Nation and lead our team across our portfolio of thought leadership, strategic advisory, coalition building and communications. I am also Senior advisor to the Gates and Rockefeller foundations and a Visiting Senior Fellow in International Relations at LSE.
Hassan Damluji
Author of The Responsible Globalist (Penguin, 2019), which first introduced the concept of a “global nation” as a framework for envisioning the future of international cooperation. Hassan spent a decade at the Gates Foundation where he was Deputy Director of Global Policy & Advocacy, and led the Middle East and East Asia teams. He was a cofounder and board member of the the Global Institute of Disease Elimination, and the $2bn Lives & Livelihoods Fund, the largest truly multilateral development initiative ever based in the Middle East. Before Gates, Hassan spent 5 years at McKinsey & Co. designing education system reforms. He graduated from Oxford and Harvard.
Paty Alemañy
Programme Officer
I oversee Global Nation’s Global Public Investment program, providing support to the Global Public Investment Network since its inception.
Paty Alemañy
Paty Alemañy brings a professional background specialising in international relations and social impact. With a career spanning various roles, she has actively contributed to the development of the Global Public Investment (GPI) concept, managed significant projects, and co-authored publications driving positive change. Her experience includes collaborating with multiple United Nations offices and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), where she has honed skills in research, project coordination, and social media management. Since June 2021, She has played different roles within the GPI arena, initially as a Programme Assistant and now as a Programme Officer. From November 2021 to May 2023, she served as the Interim Secretary for the Global Public Investment Network, actively leading its co-creation and establishment. She studied International Relations at UDELAR in Uruguay and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree on International Economics and Development at Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
Anna Hope
Programme Manager
I lead Global Nation’s Global Solidarity Programme, including the production of the annual Global Solidarity Report, delivering advocacy and outreach activities, and managing relationships with partners.
Anna Hope
Anna has twelve years’ experience in strategic communications and policy influencing. Prior to joining Global Nation Anna worked as a consultant providing strategic advice and practical support to multilateral and government agencies and INGOs on advocacy and communications to help clients achieve greater impact. She also spent eight years leading external relations for Development Initiatives (DI), a global organisation focused on improving the quality, uptake and use of data in development. Earlier in her career Anna was based in Palestine working with a community-led Human Rights Organisation on documenting human rights abuses and supporting local activists with how to effectively engage Western media. Anna holds an MRes in Global Political Economy.
Michael Stephens
Research Fellow
I am a research fellow at Global Nation with a focus on international policy and analysis of geopolitical trends. I also project manage on one of our key advisory projects with a focus on global health and resource mobilisation.
Michael Stephens
Michael Stephens specialises in Foreign Affairs and International Development, with a focus on the Middle East. He is also a Senior Fellow at RAND Europe and RUSI, focusing on security studies in the Middle East. Michael has previously served as Senior Research Analyst at the Foreign Office with a focus on Lebanon and Syria.
Muhammad Hassan
Associate Consultant
I support Global Nation’s advisory projects focused on international cooperation, global health, and partnership strategies for multilateral institutions and global philanthropy clients.
Muhammad Hassan
Muhammad has extensive experience in strategy consulting, policy advisory, and economic research. Prior to joining Global Nation, he worked at Bain & Company and advised clients on strategy development, social impact, and corporate turnaround projects across sectors including agriculture, natural resources, and private equity. At Frontier Economics, Muhammad collaborated with public and private sector clients on policy development and economic regulation in infrastructure, financial services, and transport. As a Research Assistant at the Bank of England, he has also contributed to research on inflation, labour market dynamics, and monetary policy. Muhammad holds an MSc in Financial Economics from Birkbeck, University of London and a BSc in Economics from the University of Exeter.
